Checking and computers

I vividly remember being told by a computer programmer that a computer program is only as good as the person who wrote it, that if a computer "goes wrong" it is 99% of the time due to human error.

Now I know I am prone to errors, but when it comes to setting important things up on computers I do check what I have done. I test it. So when I was setting up web pages, I checked that the pages looked right and checked that the links worked.

Unfortunately the people who set up the pages for BLPT's Trust Board Minutes don't seem to do this. For the second month running (and many times before that) they have put up an agenda where none of the links work. This is because the links point not to a web site but to an internal document on the BLPT server.

For at least the fourth time I have pointed out this same error, which has on different agendas each time. If I didn't want to read the documents I wouldn't bother - it's beginning to feel like I am doing their testing for them! You would think however, that if a mistake has been made more than once, you would check to make sure you don't make the same mistake again. Apparently not.

Not only that, but there is another "issue" with the agendas - the link for the June Agenda actually leads to the April agenda (which seems to have been uploaded as the June agenda.) Last months the links for this April agenda were working (after I pointed out the mistake and it was corrected). This month they are not. The working file has been replaced with one which does not work.

Does nobody check things any more?

Perhaps I should ask for a consultancy post!

Hi C

Not sure if it is true or not but the partner of someone in the unit last week was trying to contact the Trust (via e:mail) and was told the system was down due to hackers.

Personally, I thought it was another cock and bull story but it might just be true.

on one ( glorious) occasion..
when i was (yet again) on the other side of a table arguing the odds for a patient with a member of a certain trust...
in desperation 'said manager' suddenly burst out with
"Look I am utterly fed up with having to sit across the table from you. Couldn't you come back to the trust and couldn't we work together on this?"

i didn't

but i did consider it....

Thanks Mandy. However, I think this one is down to human error! Following my email (to which I haven't yet had a reply) the correct agenda is now linked from the Trust website and the links on that one are working. however, the links from the May agenda are not...

mmp - love that story. I'm nowhere near considering the job offer they will never make though!

since the two branches of Virgin who deal with cable and non cable packages can't speak to each other and apparently can't even e-mail each other either, I'm not really surprised that a mental health care trust can't sort out their computers - sorry they're such a source of frustration though.

Argh - don't get me started on Virgin / NTL / whatever other name they have gone by.

Sorry you are experiencing such frustration. Hope you get it sorted soon.

er....given my track record with that manager...until that moment i would have very happily and sfely bet the entire years housekeeping that he would NEVER offer me anything ...excpet an escort off the premises!!

but yes, i do see your point, you might well not want to even go there
