I've learnt...

I've learnt -
that you cannot make someone love you.
All you can do is be someone who can be loved.
The rest is up to them.

I've learnt -
that no matter how much I care,
some people just don't care back.

I've learnt -
that it's not what you have in your life
but who you have in your life that counts.

I've learnt -
that you shouldn't compare
yourself to the best others can do.

I've learnt -
that you can keep going
long after you think you can't.

I've learnt -
that heroes are the people
who do what has to be done
when it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences.

I've learnt -
that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

(Actually, I'm still learning most of these. No idea where this came from originally but it feels like it is worth posting.)

thank you - it's so true i think for all of us, well your loyal readership anyway - can't really speak for tony blair....)
I'm not sure about 'being someone who cn be loved' - we are who we are, and i for one would struggle to get past the self depracation of failing in my part of that bargain.

theres a longer and slightly diffrent version here http://www.ams.sunysb.edu/~saurabh/philosophy/learnt.html which has some interesting adjuncts...

you are loved...believe it.

Thanks for the link, Caroline - I like the version there better than the one I posted. As to "being someone who can be loved" - I think that is aspirational for me, but is something I need to work towards accepting, tough though it is. I don't feel particularly loveable or likeable a lot of the time and tend to focus on my failures.

mmp - glad it was helpful.

Katie - my weekend is half over and I have achieved things today, things for me if not for anyone else. Tomorrow is more of a work day I suspect. I was thinking of going to Church for the first tiem in a long time, but the jury is currently out on whether that would be a good thing or just another pressure.

me, i LOVE people who are failures....they amke me feel a whole let better about myself! so even failures are loveable....

but seriously, even if you *do* focus on failures, and have *failings* (As do we all) they don't make you unloveable. They make you human. and forgiven and forgivable. and much much loved.

Thanks C. One of my messages from childhood coming out there ... failure was not an option...
