Kent

We had a very refreshing short break away. It was lovely to be back in many places that held strong, positive memories for me; my grandparents lived in Kent and we visited them every summer, and my grandma was the person who loved me unconditionally and showed it. Visiting Rochester Keep I was reminded of walking across those same green spaces with her, and of climbing the tower right to the top. In West Malling, while I was very disappointed not to get sight of some photos of my ancestors which are held there, seeing the town so much unchanged from how I remembered it 30 years or more ago was wonderful. Hearing the accent of the people of that part of Kent really brought Grandma close too.

In the present, time with the family was good. The delight of our daughters in all these different, historical sights was wonderful. Spending "chill-out" time by the pool, in the pool, in the sauna, in the jacuzzi was such a stress-relief. Eating in relaxed surroundings, not having to worry about food shopping or cooking were also great pleasures - as was the book shopping! And no, I won't say how many new books our family came back with - just that it was more than two each!

And spiritually? Well, there was a fantastic display in Rochester Cathedral, by a group called Deo Gloria. It was a set of appliqued panels illustrating the creation, with accompanying text. I found a photo of one of the panels; it was just such a wonderful thing to come across. I regretted not having had longer to look at it - but then found it on the web:

How wonderful.

Found this blog hopping - it's making me homesick for Kent although my base was further south and my Cathedral Canterbury. Glad you had such a good itme.

Thank you Katie, for all you said.

Marcella, we "did" Canterbury Cathedral as well, and various other sites there. But the Rochester area was my grandparents home area, so more familiar - they lived in a small town called Snodland (the name is better than the town!)

How lovely....my children's great grandparents lived in Snodland too.
Heavens, happy memories of times spent there.

And West Malling is a wonderful place.
It's one of those endlessly marvelous places, places where ( if it were cloudy) the shops would look as if they've not changed for centuries.

Happy places. Happy memories. happy times.
I am so very pleased you could be refreshed in Kent.

(my youngest is down there now for the holidays with his dad)

Small world, mmp. My parents both grew up in Snodland; my grandma (dad's side) too, though my grandpa's home town before their marriage was Leybourne. My maternal grandparents were both Snodland born and bred.

West Malling - yes to all you say. Our daughters (15 and 11) were astounded at the age of the town. Hearing the accent of people in the streeet instantly took me back to my grandma. It's a marvellously distinctive accent if you know it. Several of the shops were the same as I remembered from childhood - 30+ years ago - especially Baldocks - still there, still looks the same!

I love shared memories.

Who knows - maybe we are related lol!
